Policy summary

New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) has adopted a one-year moratorium on student-facing generative AI in grades 2-K through 8. High-school students receive two required AI-literacy modules and may use five centrally approved AI tools only through limited, supervised pilots or approved career-readiness activities. The policy also sets screen-time recommendations and prohibits AI use for grading, behavior monitoring, placement, promotion, graduation, and other student decisions.

This is a city school-system policy, distinct from New York State’s introduced S10133 bill. Exceptions preserve access to assistive technology and language-access tools.
